The course content includes the following:-

  • Teaching techniques and methods; including importance of warm up and cool down, how to assess student's abilities, how to assess attention spans and students' retention, use of breaking down the steps and its importance plus lots more;

  • Effective Teaching Methods; adults and children; including how adults and children learn, the importance of discipline in lessons, importance of correct demonstration methods etc.

  • Psychology ; what makes people tick, how to engage students of all ages, how to assess difficult situations etc.

  • Class Management; dealing with varying numbers of students; how to manage large numbers or small numbers in a class etc. 

  • Class Presentation; how to ensure that every lesson is professionally presented

  • Musical Interpretation - there will be particular emphasis paid to this topic including discussions on percussion and demonstrations from musicians as well as applying understanding of music to dance.

  • The history of Salsa dance and music; The background of the music and its relation to the dance;

  • The difference between the salsa styles; we will cover five different dance styles including cha cha cha, salsa, bachata, merengue and our very own last man standing shines;

  • Professional code of Conduct; how it works

  • The Child Protection Act; what you need to know about it and CRB checks

  • The course will include an opportunity to use your teaching skills in a practical way during the course at one of our salsa venues;

  • Risk Assessment; First Aid and Fire Hazards etc

  • How to become part of the successful I Love Salsa in Schools team;

As well as all of the above, the course will cover the basics of salsa dance but is aimed at students who have been dancing for between six months and a year.

You will have the opportunity to take the UKA Associate exam at the end of the course but will need to have been teaching for at least one year prior to the course.  The UKA Associate exam includes a written portfolio of work to be completed prior to the theoretical exam taking place.

Together with a certificate on completion of the course, you will receive the I Love Salsa Teaching Syllabus.
